How To Start A Health Food Store

How To Start A Health Food Store

nullIf you are an entrepreneur with an interest in health and nutrition, perhaps you have been thinking about how to start a health food store.

With today’s emphasis on healthy lifestyles, healthy and organic food sales are soaring.

As you investigate how to start a health food store, explore all of your options. Do you want to lease space and run a retail health food store? Are there any health food stores currently for sale in the area?

Do you want to sell health food online? Are there any franchise possibilities to investigate? The preliminary research you do will help you decide which option best fits your vision and offers the best chance for success.

How To Start A Health Food Store – Get Started
A thriving retail health food store requires the following:

1.An ideal location: Shoppers should already exist in the area. Locating close to a gym or workout business is an added plus.
2.Inventory: Your inventory should reflect current health food trends and in-demand products.
3.Staff: Staff should be knowledgeable about store products and current health food research. They should have the ability to make recommendations to customers and steer them in the right direction.
Choose a business name that reflects what your business is about. All too often, cute or obscure names hide what a business really does. No one should have to guess that you sell health food products.

After deciding on an appropriate business name, contact your local business office and apply for your business license.

Keys To A Successful Health Food Store

Ongoing research into the latest health studies, healthy and organic food products, and buying trends will be essential in order to properly align with customer demand. The typical health food store customer is well-read and informed.

As the proprietor of a health food establishment, you will be expected to have considerable knowledge about the industry and products you carry.

A constant marketing campaign that targets the health conscious will also be important.

How To Find Customers
The more you learn about how to start a health food store, the more obvious it will be that finding customers will be a never ending process.

Prepare for your Grand Opening by mailing out fliers to gyms, fitness centers, and local business organizations. Advertise in local newspapers. Offer something free to the first 100 customers, as an example. Give people a reason to make that first visit!

Happy customers are the best form of free advertising. Offer loyalty perks to returning customers. Have special preferred customers sales.null

Form partnerships with other health oriented businesses where they either recommend or sell your health food products within their establishments. These types of business alliances are valuable because they expose your products to more people.

Expanding Your Business
There is a wide variety of health related products to add to your inventory and increase your sales. Health and herbal supplements, vitamins, books, and workout videos are all viable options.

In addition to adding products, consider bringing experts in to lecture or hold classes on nutrition, exercise, and healthy living. If you run a retail store, adding sales from an online store could bring in more profits.

By learning how to start a health food store, becoming an expert in the field, making the right business decisions, and offering customers the products they want, your health food store is on its way to success.null

Starting A Firewood Delivery Business

Starting A Firewood Delivery Business

Find related startup resources at the end of this article

If you love the outdoors and want to start a small business, starting a firewood delivery business is something you will surely love.

The recent hikes in fuel prices have brought in a new era of profitability for alternative fuels.

Many firewood suppliers are now even struggling to keep ahead of the demand.

Because of the demand, you should be able to earn a solid seasonal income in your firewood business.

Figures
Firewood is measured by a unit called as cord. A cord has the following dimensions: 8 feet in length, 4 feet in width, and 4 feet in height.

One cord of firewood releases the same amount of heat when burned as 155 gallons of fuel oil. A cord of firewood typically costs much less than its heating oil counterpart which makes it a great deal for customers with wood burning stoves and fireplaces.

Keeping up with heating oil prices (prices can fluctuate wildly) will be useful when placing your firewood for sale directly against fuel oil distributors.

Starting A Firewood Delivery Business – Regulations
The firewood business owner has to follow regulations when starting a firewood delivery business. Check your local regulations regarding the chopping of trees in your area, as many types of firewood are sale-prohibited in certain areas.

For example, some counties may temporary ban the selling of hardwood cut from the region.

The proper stacking of the wood in a cord will be crucial to your success, and failure to do so can invite regulatory measures from the authorities. The cord should be made of wood pieces that are parallel to each other, and there should be no space between the pieces.

You have to provide a receipt to your customers on delivery of the cords, and this receipt should contain the names and contact details of the buyer as well as seller. It should also specify the price and quality of cord, and what type of wood was sold.

As an added precaution, undo and stack the wood in the customer’s firewood storage area when they take a delivery. This will give them a chance to check the quantity of wood and prevent disputes if they claim later that they received inferior wood.

Processing Wood
You will need to set up facilities for drying wood, and it’s cheaper and more eco-friendly to take the natural option. Naturally dried wood pieces will not necessarily have the uniformity of length that artificially dried wood has, but this may not matter to many customers – particularly the owners of country lodges and log cabins.

Kiln dried wood is another alternative to consider, and is drier than sun-dried wood. These pieces can also be given a uniform size and have less chance of catching mold or insects than their sun-dried counterparts.

Many firewood suppliers also sell firewood racks. These neat devices allow customers to store their logs safely and ensure there is no piling of wood in front of attic doors. Firewood holders are used for keeping logs securely in the fireplace as well.

While wood is mainly bought to be burnt for cooking and heating, you are bound to find some customers in unexpected places. Designers frequently source wood logs to provide the backdrop for a photo shoot.

How to Give a Good Toast

How to Give a Good Toast

A toast is not just a useless tradition intended to embarrass or roast the celebrant, or worse, give an inexperienced public speaker a really tough time. It’s an opportunity to set the tone of the occasion, give a few wonderful insights on the celebrant, and exhort all guests to celebrate in honor of those they are toasting to.

It’s definitely a part of a ceremony that guests have begun to look forward to. Thus, if you are given the privilege of offering a toast, it is important to learn the proper etiquette and prepare for it days in advance, even if it only entails about three sentences.

Below are some DO’s when offering toasts:

DO wait for your turn. Wait for the host to call on you before you say your piece.

DO stand up. Unless you are toasting in front of a very small group of people, you have to stand up to be recognized. It will also help quiet a rowdy crowd and call their attention.

DO make sure everyone has a glass to raise before making the toast. It’s okay to use a non-alcoholic beverage, but never use water to toast as it is deemed bad luck to do so.

DO use a microphone if you have to. It’s pretty tricky to say something sweet and nice at the top of your voice so those at the other end of the hall can hear you.

DO introduce yourself briefly if not all the guests know you that well.

DO keep it short. Anecdotes should only be told by professional stand-up comedians or celebrities who will definitely catch the crowd’s attention no matter what they say. But if you’re new to giving toasts, limit it to around three sentences only. Any longer and the crowd will start being restless.

DO personalize your message. It’s better to have a prepared toast rather than speak off the cuff, but don’t extract a cookie-cutter toast, either. Try composing one especially tailored for the celebrant/s in an inspired moment and rehearse in front of family and friends. Ask them to be honest in evaluating it. If it falls flat, come up with another. You can also use a fitting quote to end your short speech.

DO say something nice. If you need to give a brief roast to break the ice, then by all means do so. But always say something flattering (but sincere) in the end.

DO make eye contact. Some people become so nervous that they stare at the ceiling, into the wine glass, on the floor, or straight at the camera when giving a toast. The proper thing to do is to make eye contact with the guests, not focusing on anyone in particular for a long time but randomly sweeping the room, and then end it by making eye contact with the person or people you’re toasting.

And here are some DON’Ts:

DON’T get drunk. Some people take a few sips of wine to help them loosen up before the toast, but overdoing it can slur your words and make you say something you weren’t planning on saying.

DON’T embarrass the celebrant. There’s a fine line between a roast and a secret that only the two of you should know about.

DON’T give a tired or inappropriate shoutout at the end. A simple “Cheers!” or “To the groom and bride!” will suffice.

My 10 Steps Before You Start a Home Business will help you achieve your dream - or it may help you decide that you really don't want to.

The purpose of completing the 10 steps is to determine if you have a workable business idea, if you can reasonably operate your business from home, to help you understand how much money it's going to take, and to help you understand how your family feels about the whole idea.

You'll benefit from completing the 10 steps whether you decide to go ahead with your home business idea or not. Make the most of it and, if you don't have to, don't rush it. It's very tempting to think you can skip steps, but if you do you may regret it later.

As you go through each step, keep notes of what you've learned. At any point in the process you may encounter an insurmountable obstacle in your path that will require you to go back and either retrace a step or start all over.

If you decide to go ahead, your notes will come in very handy when it comes time to prepare a business plan.

Fashion Ideas for Women

Fashion Ideas for Women
01.01.2010 | Author: Pier55 | Posted in Fashion for Women

Just about every woman under 6 feet tall would like to look thinner and taller. Here are a few fashion ideas for women that you might find interesting.

Colors should be chosen carefully. This is a very important factor in providing a slim appearance. Obviously, knowing which colors suit you and where these colors should be applied are important issues. While dark colors will visually diminish size, bright colors will have the opposite affect. Therefore, if you have big hips and small busts, then wear a dark color pant or skirt and light color top.

Don’t try to hide those curves with loose pants to jeans. Instead pick well-fitted pants with flared bottoms or in boot cut style. They will make you look slimmer. Avoid bottoms that are tapered and get narrower towards your ankles as they can make your bottom look large. Team your pants with some high heels to add height and make you appear slimmer.

If you’re tall, you want to break up your height visually by having a color break at the belt line. On the other hand, if you’re petite, go monotone from top to bottom in order to look taller. Avoid ruffles and pleats as these will add bulk. Go for a streamlined shape to show off your silhouette.

Show off your waist. Accentuate and exaggerate that great waist. A small waist is considered the very symbol of sensuality, so don’t hesitate to show it off. Drawing attention to your waist with a belt or a top with a fitted waist will optimize the curve of your figure. Avoid elastic waistbands. They add bulk to your mid-section.

Short dresses look best on thin figures. Avoid over sized clothes so as not to look billowy. When considering fashion ideas for women, your focus should be on clothing that fits properly – not too tight or too baggy. A top that is too big will only make you look bigger and sloppier and clothes that are too tight will also make you look larger.

Choose pencil or slightly A-line skirts – pencil skirt will show the ratio between your waist and hip measurement, giving you a sexy silhouette. Straight styles and certain A-line skirts could also be right for you, as long as they are fitted around the waist and hips.

An outfit that fits properly gives slimming as well as appealing expression. Vertical prints and stripes slim down your look and give the illusion of height. Horizontal stripes do just the opposite.

Buy well-fitted sheath dresses. These often come with a deep V-neckline. They usually have a defined waist and a figure-hugging silhouette and are often in a lightweight fabric such as silk or cotton. They flatter curvy figures and look great.

Another one of these fashion ideas for women is the short fitted jacket. In most cases, fitted jackets will flatter your legs and waist. Denim jackets are extremely versatile.

Dress well underneath – a well-fitted bra and shape wear will camouflage all your problem areas. If your bra does not fit properly, it can make you look sloppy. Since most hourglass figures are well-endowed, a well-fitted bra is a must have for you.

Wear attention-getters where you want people to look, thereby pulling attention away from body parts which you don’t want people to focus on. For example, if you’re heavy at the hip, wear a dress with a plunging neckline to take attention away from the lower part.

If it’s the upper area you’re unhappy with, wear a beautiful hemline dress to take focus to the lower half of the dress. Patterns are one of the fashion ideas for women that help to draw attention away from those problem areas.

High-heeled shoes impart a taller and slimmer look, and thereby enhance the overall look of the outfit.

Using a few of these fashion ideas for women can help you to maximize your figure and minimize your flaws, helping you to look your best. But it should be mentioned that walking with confidence goes a long way toward enhancing your image.

Looking slim and well dressed is everybody’s goal. Here’s hoping that this information helped you achieve it.

Small Business Ideas Best Home Business Business Plans Homebased Business Business Opportunity

Are you one of the many people searching for a hot home business opportunity? Then this list of the best home business opportunities based on current and future trends may be just what you're looking for.

I say "may be" because these home business opportunities are NOT suitable for people who are looking for "a money-making machine" or who "want to make money in their sleep" or any of those other phony promises.

Nor are these home business opportunities for people who expect to just make an initial investment and then just watch the money roll in. Successful home businesses are real businesses. To turn a home business opportunity into a success, you need to be prepared to work at it and have the appropriate knowledge and skills that you need to run any business.

But those caveats aside, here are what I think are the best home business opportunities - best because of their potential right now and because there's going to be a even greater demand for these products and or services over the next few years.

1) Home Renovation Services
Home renovation services are hot, hot, hot - and there's no sign of this trend slowing down. On the contrary, as the population ages, even more people are going to want to make their homes more livable by investing in the home renovations they need to stay where there are. The best home renovation to focus on for the long-term? Bathroom renovations.

2) Pet-Based Products
Is there anything that indulgent pet owners won't buy for their pets? If you can come up with a product for dogs or cats that you can produce in your home, you'll have a real winner of a home business opportunity on your hands. From designer collars to "organic" pet foods, the sky's the limit.

3) Catering Services
Think dinner for eight. Not just delivered, but served. Catering services aren't just for big parties any more. Career couples are having almost every social occasion catered, and busy families who are tired of living on take-out are spending more on having food brought in. If you have a knack for planning and preparing nourishing, appealing food and can deliver it hot, this is the home business opportunity for you.

4) Cleaning Services
Along the same lines, there's currently a heavy demand for cleaning services, and the demand for domestic cleaning services will only increase. If you're good at organizing and comfortable with the thought of running a crew, this home business opportunity has the potential of turning into something big.

5) Fall Prevention Products
Did you know that falls are the leading cause of fatal injury among elderly Canadians? Did you know that falls in seniors account for over $10 million health care dollars annually in Toronto alone? Now what if you developed or distributed a product related to helping seniors prevent falls? Think of the growing size of the potential market!

6) Wedding Consultant/Planner Services
More people are opting to get married which means growing opportunities for wedding consultant services. Unless the laws change in the United States, there will also continue to be a growing demand for weddings from gay couples seeking to tie the knot. Are you good at planning? Do you have a mind for details? Becoming a wedding consultant could be the home-based business opportunity you've been looking for.

7) Dietary Consultant Services
Another growing trend that's only going to get larger is the perceived need for dietary advice. People are increasingly concerned about the food they put in their mouths and increasingly aware of the connection between dietary habits and their general health - and they're increasingly prepared to pay for personalized dietary planning and advice.

8) In-Home Beauty Services
This home-based business opportunity combines two trends; the insatiable demand for services that make people look and feel younger and better and the growing desire to have those services delivered. And why not? Having someone come to your home and cleanse and tone your skin and do your makeup is the height of luxury.

9) Sewing and Alteration Services
Sewing is on the way to becoming a lost art as more and more people find they have less and less time. But as not everyone is the regulation size, the demand for other people to provide these services will only increase. If you're really skilled, tailoring is another good home-based business opportunity.

10) Life/Business Coaching Services
Coaching has been hot for a while now, but I think this new industry will continue to grow. Remember when everyone had or wanted a personal fitness trainer? Now everyone has or wants a personal coach. If you have the skills and training necessary, this is a great home-based business opportunity because it can be done remotely as well as in person.

And a last tip - Most of the home-based business opportunities on this list call for specialized training or skills. If you don't have the specialized training or skills needed for a particular home-based business opportunity, you can still "be a part of it". Find a person with the appropriate training or skills and invest in his or her business.

The best home-based business is the one you start with your own two hands – not the one in the ad or the one your friend is promoting.

How do you start a successful home-based business? The secret of success is not to stop halfway through the business selection process as so many people do. Follow these six steps to start a home-based business that will succeed rather than just being a drain of your time and money.

1. Assess your talents.

Think of your talents as the things you’re really good at. They’re like personality traits. For instance, you may be a very creative person, or a person who’s really good at attending to details or a person with a gift for communicating. Your talents are the base for any successful business venture, including a home-based business.

2. Examine your skills.

These are the things that you can do. The difference between talents and skills is that talents are passive and skills are active. Or, to put it another way, you’re born with talents but you develop skills over time as you learn. For instance, a creative person may have excellent skills for drawing or writing or design. A person who has a talent for attending to detail may have strong accounting or organizational skills.

3. Put your talents and skills together and generate business ideas.

The procedure I’m outlining here will work for starting any kind of business, but as we’re focusing on home-based businesses, the question is, “With these talents and skills, what kind of home-based business could I start?”

Suppose you’re one of those people who has accounting and organizational skills and the talents to back them. Some of the home business ideas you come up with could include:

* Tax preparation
* Bookkeeping
* Business manager
* Professional organizer

And that’s just four ideas from our limited premise here. When you’re doing this exercise, you, of course, have more than one or two skills, so you’ll find that your list of possible home business ideas is much longer.

Don’t censor yourself as you list home business ideas. List all your ideas at this stage; crossing off choices comes later.

(If you’re having trouble coming up with business ideas, see 7 Sources of Business Ideas to help you get started thinking as an entrepreneur.)

4. Give your business ideas the home-based business test.

The fact is that not all businesses are going to work well as home-based businesses, and some won’t work at all. You are not going to be able to start a manufacturing business in a residential neighbourhood, for example, and any home-based business that involves a lot of clients coming and going is sure to upset the neighbours.

Go back over your list and cross off any business ideas that won’t work as home-based businesses.

If you are intent on starting a home-based business where you actually get to work at home, also cross off any business that could be operated as a home-based business but wouldn’t allow you to work at home. For example, in the short list of sample business ideas above, I would cross off “business manager”, as this would involve off-site work.

Many people who want to start home-based businesses stop here. They’ve come up with an idea for a home-based business that they like and feel they’ll be good at, so they plunge into it at this point.

Don’t make this mistake! If you do, you run an extremely high risk of investing months of your time, energy and money in a losing venture and seeing the home-based business you had such hopes for fail. As I said in the introduction, the secret to starting a home-based business that will succeed is to work through the entire business selection process. The next two steps are critical to your home-based business’s success.

(Continued from Page 1)

Figuring out the profit angle and doing a business plan are two important parts of the process of starting a home-based business – two parts that many people starting a home-based business don’t bother with. But if you want to start a home-based business that will succeed, rather than just being another business failure that drained your time and wallet and left you disappointed, you need to pay particular attention to these two steps of the starting a home-based business process.

5. Figure out the profit angle.

This is the litmus test for anyone wanting to start a home-based business. You may have a great talent for something and the skills that enable you to express it, but if people aren’t willing to pay you for the product or service, it won’t work as a business. For each home based business idea, you need to know the answer to two questions:

* How much are people willing to pay me for this product or service?
* Can I make a sufficient income from that?

Suppose that you, being a creative person, are able to make beautiful quilts. However, because of the time involved, you’re only able to make two quilts per month. You discover that people are willing to pay $200 for each quilt you produce. The math says that you would have, therefore, an income of $400 per month. (Actually less, as there will be expenses related to quilt production, such as cloth and thread, to deduct from this amount.)

An outrageous example, isn’t it? But many people put themselves in a very similar position by starting home-based businesses without considering the profit angle. Business is about profit, and without sufficient profit, you’ll never have enough income to even pay the bills, let alone generate wealth. (For more on creating a business that actually produces income, see Is Your Business Model Broken?)

Go back to your list of home business ideas and assess the profit-making potential of each. If the answer to either of the two questions above isn’t satisfactory, cross that idea for starting a home-based business off your list.

Note that you decide how much income is enough. Many people run part-time home-based businesses that supplement their income and are perfectly satisfied with that. In their "Job Outlook 2012" report, the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) uncovered which college degrees are most wanted by employers in 2012. The report also noted that the surveyed employers said that they plan to hire 9.5 percent more new graduates between 2011 and 2012 than they did between 2010 and 2011. New York career expert and psychologist, Eileen Sharaga, is not surprised by these numbers. "Economic reports indicate that employers are starting to hire," says Sharaga, noting that industries like accounting, finance, and computer science are seeing a bright hiring outlook. STARTING A PARATRANSIT BUSINESS

You may find that you can combine your love of driving with serving the needs of the elderly and disabled when you start a paratransit business.

This venture involves picking up special-needs individuals from their homes or other locations, assisting them into the vehicle, and safely driving them to their destination. Of course, you will usually be required to provide them with a ride in the other direction as well.Urban Transit: The Private Challenge to Public Transportation

This sector of the population is expected to remain stable or grow as the average age of American citizens continues to increase. Because many of these customers can’t drive or afford handicap-enabled vehicles of their own, they will rely on your services for transportation.

WHAT TO DO FIRST

When you start a paratransit business, your office location will have little impact on your level of business. Take advantage of this by choosing a location that provides ample space for the price. You will need room to house several large vans as well as office space for your dispatcher.

At least one wheelchair-accessible van is required to start your new business. While it doesn’t have to be brand new, you should make sure that it is clean and in prime condition. It will need a wheelchair lift and equipment to safely secure the chair inside the van.Urban Transit: The Private Challenge to Public Transportation

Before you start a paratransit business, call your state’s division of motor vehicles (DMV) to find out if they have special requirements to transport handicapped people. At a very minimum, you will need a chauffeur’s license that allows you to drive passengers.

Depending on your area, you may also need a taxi license. Keep in mind that many areas regulate the rates of taxi drivers. If this is the case in your location , you should check to see if there is an exception for paratransit driving services.

You may be able to charge slightly higher rates as compensation for additional equipment and time requirements. Some of your customers may be able to claim their paratransit expenses on their health insurance. If this is a possibility, check with the major insurance providers in your area to make sure that you meet all the requirements to become an approved transit service. The economic impact of Section 16 of the Urban Mass Transportation Act on small businesses transporting the elderly and handicapped in New England (SuDoc SBA 1.20/3:53)

KEYS TO PARATRANSIT SUCCESSSearch Amazon.com for PARATRANSIT BUSINESS
Treat your clients with the utmost respect and care, while providing service at a fair price, to guarantee your success. Once a special-needs customer develops a relationship with a driver, they will be more likely to request their services in the future.

They will tell all of their friends and acquaintances about the great ride that they received from your company. On the other hand, if they are made to feel uncomfortable or unsafe, they will dread a trip provided by your paratransit business and look for any other possible alternatives.

To find customers when you start a paratransit business, create flyers to distribute at local doctor’s offices, retirement homes, and hospitals. Remember that many of your potential customers may be strapped for cash. A healthy discount offer, or even a frequent-customer discount card, will attract many new riders.

Create your own website and make sure that you are included on any local sites that list taxi services. Because you are not in direct competition with local cab companies, get to know the owners and dispatchers. Let them know about your services. Ask them to refer customers to you when they can’t service a specific customer, and offer to return the favor. Many of your customers will only suffer temporary disabilities that can be corrected through treatment.

At some point in the future, you may be interested in expanding your paratransit business. The obvious choice is to purchase new vans and hire extra drivers. You could also open an additional office in a neighboring town. Alternative options include outfitting personal vehicles with wheelchair lifts or training paratransit drivers for other companies.Community Transport: Policy, Planning and Practice (Transportation Studies)

HOW TO HOST A DINNER PARTY

Spending on a dinner party is no joke, and to get your money’s worth, you should prepare for it weeks in advance. Keep in mind that anything ordered rush is likely to add to your tab. You’ll have your own reasons for hosting one, as most people do.

Some don’t mind spending thousands of dollars on a one-night affair just to meet contacts for their business. Others simply want to be the talk of the town and try their best to beef up their guest list with society’s crème de la crème.How to Host a Murder: A Dinner Party Game for Eight

To come up with a successful event, secure the services of friends and family who’ve gone through the same thing and can guide you through the process, or hire a professional party planner. They just might be worth the added expense.

Check out lifestyle and society mags to have an idea about party themes, the hottest décor, and the latest on entertainment. Send out extraordinary invitations. You can even generate a lot of excitement over your dinner party days before the actual event by creating a website informing guests about the theme or giving teasers of what they can expect to experience on that day.

The secret to a successful dinner party is inviting the right kind of people. Include those who are gregarious and popular, those who can easily mingle, and guests who can enliven an otherwise lethargic crowd.

Whether you’re catering the entire shebang or preparing some dishes yourself, see to it that you’re free to entertain as soon as the guests start arriving. Without the help of professionals, expect to do everything from greeting people at the door to checking their coats to serving them postprandial coffee.

If you’re harried because of a lack of extra hands, guests would feel uneasy about arriving when they see that you’re running to and fro, even when they arrive on time. Leave the heating and the plating to someone else so you’ll be where you’re supposed to be – at the door, greeting your guests upon their arrival.

Introduce the new arrivals to other guests and get the conversations going. For instance, you can introduce your brother to a female guest and mention a hobby they have in common, just to jumpstart a conversation between them. Find some common ground for them to start with. This way, even guests who arrive alone won’t feel out of place.

As host of the dinner party, you have the prerogative of deciding on the seating arrangement. A memorable dinner would have men and women sitting alternately, with couples seated apart. This will allow for mingling and detracts from the usual conversations that groups of women and groups of men have.

After dinner, don’t jump into dish washing duty. You need to be visible as a host even after the meal, so recruit some help to do this job for you. Otherwise, wait until the last guest has left.Party Snacks!: 50 Simple, Stylish Recipes to Make You a Popular Party Host

One of your main objectives in hosting a dinner party is to impress. Take this opportunity to put your best foot forward. Hire professionals to clean your place up days before the event. Use the best dinnerware you can get your hands on. Keep the towels fresh in the washroom and have someone clean up after every guest. Get live entertainment if you must. If you do a good job, you’ll be the talk of the town until your next hosting gig.Esquire's Handbook for Hosts: A Time-Honored Guide to the Perfect Party

I talk to a lot of people who would love to run their own business, and they would like to start as a small home based enterprise. But these people never really take the first step because they do not believe they are qualified. On the other hand, I have surveyed dozens of people, from many different backgrounds who took the plunge. What is the difference between the two groups of people? Really, the only difference I can see is that one group never got started, and the other group went ahead and took a risk!

Here are some ideas for some very simple home based businesses that require very little startup money, special skills, or time. They can be started out of a kitchen table, and can also be performed on a part-time or moonlighting basis. This list is not all-inclusive by any means but should give you some ideas for futher research.

* EBay Seller – If you read about many very successful online auction sellers, you will find that many started by selling the things they no longer wanted around their own home. Do you have obselete video games, outgrown clothes, or books you have already read around the house? If so, you already have some inventory to go ahead and test the waters as an EBay seller.
* Yard Care – Not all work-at-home jobs must be based upon the internet. The guy who mows my lawn started out because he was displaced during a hurricane. He borrowed an old truck and a lawn mower, and he started knocking on doors where he saw some unkept lawns. As luck would have it, one of my neighbors runs a property company, and she ended up hiring him for her business after using him on her own lawn. Now he is so busy it is hard to get him, and he ended up buying a new truck, new equipment, and hiring employees.
* Pet Sitting/Dog Walking – I met a lady on the beach who was relaxing because she could now hire employees to walk dogs and pet sit. She started out promoting herself in a neighborhood newspaper, and then expanded to regional ads.
* Mystery Shoppers – Again, I spoke with a woman who made $1,500 one summer, and also got some great goodies and free meals, by doing mystery shopping. I think it is hard to make a full time income, but it can be a fun and flexible way to earn some extra cash.
* Online Freelancers – The internet has generated a lot of demand for freelance work, which could be anything from article writing to programming. Visit some webmaster forums and find a buy/sell/trade section where you will see jobs for hire. You may need special technical skills for some of them, but you do not need much more than the ability to write or fill out forms for others.
* Professional Organizers – Are you organized? Well, it may not suprise you that many people and even businesses are not organized. And they will pay a person to help them get things in order. There is a growing demand for people who will come in and get things cleaned up, both at home and in an office.

No matter what you’re good at, you are sure to find a market for that skill. The only real thing that is holding you back from starting a home based business is your own fear.

You're lucky. You work from home. You're your own boss and you answer to no one but yourself. You may have worked years or even decades at a regular job, but now you get to make your own rules and set your own hours. There's no need to fight the alarm clock every morning, nor is there any reason to go to bed early at night. Since you're your own boss, you don't have to worry about getting written up, laid off, or fired.

Since you're reaping all the benefits of working from home, you're also stuck with the responsibilities. You're in charge of every aspect of your home business, which means you have to handle the bad along with the good.

One of the biggest challenges you'll ever face is motivation. Many individuals working from home are content with just earning enough money to get by, and don't strive to take their small business to the next level. If you find yourself slacking from time to time, then you need a good motivation boost.

Here are some tips to help you stay motivated:

Take some time to think about why you started working from home to begin with. Was it because you wanted freedom? Was it for the money? Were you having trouble finding a job anywhere else? In other words, what motivated you to start your own small business in the first place? Try invoking the same feelings again, and you will find yourself motivated once more.

Set goals for yourself. They don't necessarily have to be large goals—in fact, you will be better off setting small and easy goals. Try to get through one step at time. Plan to work an hour more every day. Try earning an extra $100 a week. What about $200? Just imagine what all you can do with that extra $100 or $200 each week!

Create a vision board. A vision board can be a wallpaper or collage of everything you want in life. It can include pictures of your dream car, dream home, yacht, land, famous places that you want to visit, and so forth. Anytime you need a boost of motivation, just look at your vision board! It will remind you of everything you can obtain if you work hard enough.

If you're not feeling very inspired and your creative juices aren't flowing, don't force yourself. The more aggravated you become, the less motivated you'll be. You also won't be able to produce quality content when you're feeling down. It's ok to take breaks. Sometimes lack of motivation doesn't necessarily mean that you're not doing any work—it could also mean that you're working TOO hard. Lie down to read a book or take a nap if you have to. Sometimes a bit of rest is all we need to stay motivated.

Working toward goals and taking breaks may seem contradictory, but they both play an important role in motivation. You can work and still rest. There is time enough to do both. Napping doesn't necessarily equate to laziness. Laziness is when you don't even try to motivate yourself.

If you work hard and find yourself stuck, then you need to rejuvenate yourself somehow. Once you're done resting, then you can get back to work again. You will more than likely have everything sorted out in your head after resting up, and before you know it, your work will be all done!

It doesn't matter how much money you earn by working at home. Nor does it matter how successful your small business is. At some point in time, you will find yourself needing motivation. You need to: think about why you wanted to work from home to begin with, evaluate your present situation, and make plans for the future.

Never let yourself forget why you're working from home. You are luckier than most people out there. You don't have to trudge to work every day slaving away for a thankless boss. Be thankful that you have freedom and independence that most people don't. As long as you can stay motivated and focused, your earning potential is unlimited and you can live a lifestyle most people only dream about.

Three Real Businesses People Do From Home

Three Real Businesses People Do From Home
Are There Real Work At Home Businesses?

It is fairly easy to get cynical about work at home opportunities because we have heard about so many scams, or maybe even gotten involved in some fairly shady schemes that really did not work out very well. But there are many people who have either started, or continue to, run real legitimate and useful businesses from their homes. Sometimes they even hire other home workers, and so they provide work at home jobs.

Many of these opportunities can be started part-time with a very small investment. So they are the type of small businesses where a person can dip a toe in, as they say, to see how it works out. Then they could expand or contract as the individual owner requires.

Food Catering Business: The general term, food catering, actually covers a lot of niche businesses. They could range from specialized mobile catering or lunch trucks to preparing gourmet treats for business events and weddings to delivering healthy meals in the same way that a pizza man delivers, well, pizza!

This can be simple or complicated. Some areas may require a licensed kitchen in order to prepare food for sale. If you run a snack truck where you only sell pre-packaged food from wholesale distributors or if you prepare food at the customer’s house or location (personal chef), you will need much less paperwork than if you want to prepare the food on your own site and deliver it.

You may be able to cater from home, but in many locations you would need a seperate commercial kitchen. Legally, you probably cannot use your family kitchen. However, many flexible caterers have solved this problem by renting (or working out an agreement) with a local church or similar organization that does maintain a commercial kitchen.

Otherwise, the rest of the business like planning, meeting clients, or advertising for more clients, can be done from a home office.

Party Planner:Again, this could cover anything from planning a toddler’s first birthday part to a wedding with 300 guests. It all depends upon your own particular expertise, talents, and ambitions.

Virtual Assistant: This field is actually growing right now. As small businesses try to control costs, they are more willing to hire out certain tasks. Of course, the particular tasks you would be open for will depend upon your skills, abilities, and training.

You may work purely from home, over the Internet or a phone, setting appointments, filling out spreadsheets, handling social media (i.e. Facebook, etc.), or handling customer service. If you are mobile, small businesses may need somebody to run errands, hand out fliers, or man booths at local events.

Health And Fitness Business Ideas

As baby boomers age, they are more concerned than ever with staying fit – which is why the health and fitness business is a booming industry.

If you are considering opening a small business where you can use great interpersonal and motivational skills alongside knowledge of nutrition and health, this may be the right area for you.

What Type of Health And Fitness Business Is Right For You?

Because this industry is vast – from personal trainers to registered dieticians to health food stores – the first step is to decide what area you will concentrate in.

This large group can be split into three smaller groups for easier consideration: nutrition, fitness, and care.

NUTRITION

There are a variety of ways to help clients improve their health through better nutrition Food Politics: How the Food Industry Influences Nutrition, and Health, Revised and Expanded Edition (California Studies in Food and Culture). To be a registered dietician (RD), you need to have a Bachelor’s degree in Dietetics or Nutrition, complete an approved internship, and pass the national registered dietician exam. A registered dietetic technician (DTR) requires an Associate’s degree.Massage Therapy for Professionals v2.0

Another option for entering the nutrition business is to recommend and sell healthy food items and other health products. You can do this by developing your own recipes and packaging food for sale. Perhaps you might focus on eliminating allergens from your recipes or using organic ingredients?
Food and Health
Alternatively you could become a representative of a company that sells nutrition products. By becoming familiar with the products, you can then make a recommendation to interested customers.

If you are interested in even more sales opportunities, you could start your own health food store or become part of a franchise.

FITNESS

You may have clients train in your home, which would require you to invest in a variety of exercise equipment. Alternatively you could train in the client’s home – provided they have the necessary machines.

As a trainer, you have the flexibility to set your own hours, but marketing may be your most difficult task.

Another option is to be a trainer at a gym, where commercial fitness equipment is already provided. People who go to gyms are already interested in physical fitness, so up-selling them to the next level of personal training may be easier.

If you’d rather show than tell, consider being a group fitness instructor at a gym. You often have flexibility in designing your own routines, and you can make people sweat and get your own workout at the same time.

Care
The care category of health and fitness business ideas deals with providing healthcare services to those in need. These services could include home healthcare for the elderly, psychiatric services, counseling, and occupational therapy – to name just a few.

What You’ll Need

If you don’t, it’s essential you acquire as much training and experience as you can before you strike out on your own.

You can apprentice with other roofing professionals or building contractors. Some organizations, such as the United Union of Roofers, Waterproofers and Allied Workers (www.unionroofers.com) have apprenticeship programs to guide you on your way.Roofing Contractor Business Plan - MS Word/Excel

Roofing work is very physical, and very weather dependant. Work may be seasonal if you live in an area prone to iciness or rain.

On the positive side, the roofing business is growing faster than average. According to the Bureau of Labor, employment of roofers is expected to grow 16% in the next few years. Marketing Your Business

How To Start A Dog Training Business

How To Start A Dog Training Business
Business Idea

If your dogs always obey your every command, you may be able to turn this skill into a money-making opportunity by learning how to start a dog training business. This type of venture involves working with both dogs and their owners to teach obedience and behavior skills. Most of the time, you’ll be teaching the dog owner more than the actual dog.

While you’ll always come across one or two dogs who think that they’re in charge, most canines are eager to please. Once their owner understands how to be consistent and effectively communicate with their pet, the dog will usually fall right in line.

When first learning how to start a dog training business, decide where you will be conducting your classes. Many dog trainers operate in parks or pet stores. Some provide private instruction at the customer’s home. If this is your goal, you won’t need an formal office (other than a place for you to take care of administrative activities such as bookkeeping and sales calls).

If you plan on providing a climate-controlled indoor area for training classes, rent a large, open building if you don’t have a barn or something similar at home. In addition to space, you’ll only need a few additional supplies like treats and training aids to start.
How To Start A Dog Training Business – What You’ll Need

While learning how to start a dog training business doesn’t legally require any specific type of training, many of your customers will expect some type of certification. Because there aren’t any legal requirements, potential trainers can literally answer a few questions and basically purchase their certification.

Do yourself a favor and pursue a legitimate certification program that offers courses about animal behavior and various training methods. Even if your way is better than any of the known training approaches, it’s never a bad idea to develop a little well-rounded knowledge. Organizations like the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT) can provide more information about reputable programs.
Keys To A Successful Dog Training Business

By gaining a reputation for transforming the most ill-mannered dog into an obedient companion animal, you can guarantee your success as dog trainer. This means more than teaching a puppy to shake hands or play dead. It will mean correcting troublesome behavior that includes anxiety, aggressiveness, or simply ignoring every command.

While understanding how dogs think will help you along your way, a little human psychology won’t hurt a bit. In most cases, a person who has a way with animals can completely turn a troubled animal around given enough time and consistency. This illustrates the fact that both the dog and the owner usually need to change behaviors and habits during the entire course of training.
Finding Clients For Your Business

As you learn how to start a dog training business, think about what you can do to attract customers. Once you’ve established yourself, word of mouth will do the rest, but finding those first customers can be a challenge.

Creating a website that describes your approach and various services is one way to find clients. Printing pamphlets and business cards that can be left at pet stores, veterinarian offices, and animal grooming shops is another way. If you can afford to do so, conducting a free class to generate a little buzz would be a great way to get your word-of-mouth advertising started.
Expansion Ideas

Once your dog training business is well-established, you may decide to expand. Consider training other potential trainers or creating an instructional book or DVD. If you like working with the animals better than the people, you could always train your own family of animals for a variety of purposes.

For example, trained dogs can be used in commercials and films or they can work as service animals. If one of your animals becomes a star, your services will be in high demand. At this point, you could consider training birds or exotic animals for other similar opportunities.
